Built Like a Fridge
Happy Friday folks! Welcome back to the newsletter. This week, we're getting up close and personal with the grocery buying habits of the American populous.
June Ins and Outs
lightly gay, for pride
ins
- following your heart at the bookstore
- black eyeliner in the waterline
- acknowledging that my teen-self had excellent taste in music
- tofu larb
outs
- accidentally taking a 6pm nap
- white fish
- wearing business casual in the summer
Oh, honey
I'm not sure why, but much of the past week has been spent discussing groceries with friends. Not like recipe sharing or anything more normal, but like talking about budgeting and what people buy and what can a look into someone's fridge tell you about them.
Amy, Nat and I played this game from the NYT and we did pretty good. I was so inspired by this quiz that I have decided to make my own, with a twist for pride.
Below you'll find pictures submitted to me by subscribers of this very newsletter. Your task, dear reader, is to assess whether the fridge you see is owned by a gay person or a straight person. I encourage you to really get into the nitty gritty of the contents of these fridges and make some snap judgements on people's sexualities.
Without further ado:

- We've got many a trader joe's item, some glass tupperware, and not one but two kinds of noosa yogurts. The loose produce arranged in rainbow order might be a red herring or a dead giveaway. Gay or straight?

- We've got copious amounts of tofu, some la croix, and maple syrup in a designated dispenser. Really a tough call. Gay or straight?

- Here we see somewhere between 4 and 6 containers of greens, homemade pickled red onions in a Weck jar, and a plethora of sides in the tiniest tupperware imaginable. Gay or straight?

- We've got oat milk, we've got at least 3 varieties of yogurt, we've got decanted maple syrup. Real shooters might be familiar with this fridge aside from this newsletter segment. Gay or straight?

- Take special notice at the drinks shelf on this one. Gay or straight?
Answers:
- 1 - that fridge is managed by a gay person
- 2 - owned by a straight, married couple
- 3 - this fridge belongs to a straight home
- 4 - overseen by a queer couple with a lot of cooking aspirations
- 5 - a trick question! This is a fab roommate duo comprised of a gay man and bi woman
How'd you do? If you got any less than 3 I think you have some homophobia worth looking into and perhaps unpacking.
art!
here's some stuff I made this week. I went to a portrait drawing class and a regular figure drawing session, both with LDB. Plus some other things that look nice.

recs
(2) song(s) i'm loving:
- I'm Scared I'll Never Sleep Again - 5 Seconds of Summer
- Night Moves - Bob Seger
a movie i watched:
- Plainclothes (2025). Tom Blyth in everything pls.
a book i'm reading:
- I read A Short Stay in Hell by Stephen L. Peck in one go this week, which was a good little novella and I'm glad I read it, but it's so bleak in tone that it did have me feeling weird for the rest of the day. I've started American Spirits by Anna Dorn and so far so good but I'm only like 25 pages in.
Until Next Time!
P.S.
This week I applied to a server/bartender position that did not accept a resume, but instead required that I take an ai personality test. Please enjoy a curated selection of questions I had to respond to.
